Indian boxer Jadumani Singh recalled the significance of his unanimous-decision victory over Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman on Kargil Vijay Diwas during an interaction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners in New Delhi. Singh went on to claim silver in the men’s 55kg category at the Glasgow Games.
Singh defeated Rehman 5-0 in their Round of 16 bout, a result he said carried particular meaning because of his association with the Indian Army. Speaking about the contest, Singh said he was determined to win and dedicated the victory to Indian Army heroes.
A significant Round of 16 victory
The boxer explained that the date of the bout gave the contest an added emotional dimension. Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates the victory in the Kargil conflict, and Singh said facing a Pakistani opponent on that day strengthened his resolve.
“It was Kargil Day. The day I fought against Pakistan was on that day. Being from the Indian Army, I was very determined that I had to beat Pakistan. I defeated them 5-0 and dedicated it to our Indian Army heroes,” Singh said during the interaction.
The 5-0 verdict put Singh through from the Round of 16 and formed part of his route to the silver medal in the men’s 55kg division. His recollection was raised when the Prime Minister asked him about the winner on Kargil Vijay Diwas in a video later shared on YouTube.
Prime Minister Modi praised the significance Singh attached to the result and his dedication. He said that remembering the Kargil heroes and dedicating the achievement to them added further meaning to the victory.
Singh’s silver was one of 39 medals earned by India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. India’s final return comprised 13 gold medals, 17 silver medals and nine bronze medals, placing the contingent fourth in the overall medal standings.
Medal winners reflect on Glasgow campaign
The New Delhi interaction also featured weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won gold in the 48kg category in Glasgow. Her victory was her third Commonwealth Games gold, following titles in the 48kg division in 2018 and the 49kg division at Birmingham 2022.
Chanu said she was happy and emotional after winning in Glasgow, referring to the disappointment of missing an Olympic medal by 1kg. She also spoke about the challenges she faced over the preceding four years, including injuries and family problems.
Prime Minister Modi praised Chanu’s emotional medal-winning moment, while Chanu described the experience of standing on the podium as overwhelming when the national flag is raised and the national anthem is played.
The Glasgow Games concluded after 11 days of competition. Scotland formally handed over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which is set to host the centenary edition of the multi-sport event in Ahmedabad in 2030.
For Singh, the Glasgow campaign ended with a silver medal, while his 5-0 Round of 16 win over Rehman remains the moment he identified as especially memorable: a victory achieved on Kargil Vijay Diwas and dedicated to Indian Army heroes.
